I was tasked with identifying a problem area in packaging and redesigning it to be more eco-friendly. I discovered a glaring issue with many tofu products, which was their use of plastic in packaging.

I discovered that many tofu consumers online have been expressing their issue with tofu being packaged in plastic and not easily recyclable. For this reason, I chose to completely rethink how we package and sell tofu.
During this process, I discovered that America is one of the largest producers of soybeans, the primary ingredient in tofu. However, many Americans have not implemented tofu into their diet. As of recently, however, there has been a growing amount of people including tofu in their diet in America. This number has only been growing since, proving there is a market for this product in America.
So, I designed a turn-in system to be implemented at stores such as Trader Joe’s. The consumer would purchase a glass container of Tofu which they would take home. After using the product, the consumer could then return the glass container. While returning the container, the consumer would also bring the coupon located on the packaging in order to get a discount on their purchase of the next Toco tofu. This would encourage the consumer to keep coming back for more tofu and to return these eco-friendly containers rather than just throw them away. This packaging redesign solves the issue many consumers are facing by saying goodbye to plastic packaging altogether!
